Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian in the early 1900s, wrote about the “God of the gaps” in his Letters and Papers from Prison, describing how humans often go to God when all else fails—when we reach our limitations. In contrast to this human approach to the divine, Bonhoeffer speaks of God not being at the boundary of our lives but at the centre; not where human capacity fails but in its strengths. He describes a God who sits not at humanity’s limitations but at its core—a God who embraces us in all our vulnerability, walking in the midst of life’s toils and pain.

This is exactly what the stories of chaplaincy shared by Dr Stenoy (Steve) Stephenson in this book reveal. As patients and their families turn to God in crisis, they find through the ministry of presence provided by chaplains that God is with them in their grief, pain and distress.

These inspiring stories of solidarity shared between chaplains and those to whom they minister, including patients, their families and members of staff, offer a fresh understanding of the formation of spirituality through challenging and painful paths—paths that culminate in a renewed understanding of the presence of God and the healing of the soul.

God of the Gaps takes us into some of the most extreme of human experiences: a family saying goodbye to a loved one; an emergency room visit that has shattered multiple lives; a terminal diagnosis; estranged relationships as life ticks away; a search for hope after a life lived without God that is suddenly coming to an end. But we do not go there alone. We are invited into these moments in the company of an experienced and compassionate hospital chaplain—and we find that God is already there ahead of us.

Indeed, it is in this most extreme human moments—“the gaps” in our human understanding and resources—that sometimes God appears most real. And Dr Steve Stephenson also urges that it is by our “ministry of presence” that we can also be agents of help, hope and healing in these experiences in the lives of those around us.

When illness strikes and certainty disappears, people often find themselves in the gaps of life—those moments where medicine reaches its limits, answers fall short and hope feels fragile.

These are 25 true stories from the frontlines of care at Sydney Adventist Hospital, where patients, families and staff encounter God in unexpected ways. Each story is paired with thoughtful reflections on the story, encouraging those who serve others in demanding, high-pressure environments. Together, they testify to a compassionate God who meets people in their deepest need—bringing comfort, hope and, at times, remarkable healing—right in the gaps where He is needed most.

"Dr Stephenson’s book fills an important gap in our understanding of the role of chaplains. The narratives speak for themselves, pointing to the transformative power of the ministry of the presence."
